These buttons are cast and made from white metal (light colored alloys). The eye and flat disk are cast as one piece and the mold seam is visible. The face can be plain or have a molded design. Nineteenth century examples can have a script letter "I," or "U S," indicating General Service coat buttons of the militia in the War of 1812.
